this is with reference to Riyadh(KSA) as im an Indian expat studying in KSA n this survey is part of my economics project .So universal opinions r welcome n evry1 is free 2 express their view !! :DAre traffic cameras really meant for vehicular discipline or are they just a means of government revenue?
In my state the fine is limited by state law to $80 and 0 points.
I think they should raise the fine to $5000 per violation. That would really take a bite out of the budge deficit.
SO
$80 not much revenue impact - moderate safety impact
$5000 huge revenue impact - huge safety impact.
In my opinion, most of the violations that are caught and ticket by means of traffic cameras are petty. The purpose of traffic laws is safety for drivers. If you slowly roll through a right hand turn on a red light when nobody is coming without making a complete 3-second stop, nobody's safety is at risk. In cases like these, which (in my opinion) is most of the time, the camera is meant for government revenue. There may be a rare instance when the camera catches something truly awful, but I think that the actual reason for installing these cameras is for the government to make money. Are traffic cameras really meant for vehicular discipline or are they just a means of government revenue?
If they make people think twice about speeding and penalise those who break the law, then yes they are a vehicular discipline. Everyone of sound mind will watch their speed where there are speed cameras. Whatever the drivers feelings are about it are irrelevant, because it could have potentially saved a life had they hit someone at 30mph instead of 45mph.
Since government agencies provide the funds to build, site, and maintain the cameras, then it is right that they generate revenue. They have cost money to put them there, so what is wrong with clawing back the expense?
Just another means for the government to generate revenue, when they put them up around here, the decreased the time for the yellow light to get more money, and then they started to get a lot of accidents as the folks who all ready got tickets in the mail really slammed on the brakes to make sure they were not in the intersection when the cameras took the picture. it's just a total scam. Are traffic cameras really meant for vehicular discipline or are they just a means of government revenue?
