I was recently on holiday in the UK (from Canada) and was quite surprised to see the number of speed cameras (or warning signs, at least) on UK highways. I know that many drivers must find them irritating, but given that violations carry fairly substantial fines, it would appear that it must be difficult for drivers to ignore them. Does anyone know how effective the traffic camera systems have been at reducing speeds, or can you point me to references that discuss their effectiveness? Are speed cameras in the UK effective at reducing driving speeds?
Speed cameras are the prostate exam of the road, nobody likes them but we're made to believe they're necessary.
The only people who like speed camera's are police and politicians because they bring in over 250 million dollars a year in revenue.
Nobody knows how many lives they save, because nobody cares.
The only good thing about them is once you know where they are, you can slow down as you come up to them and then speed off merrily as they go out of range.
They have a proven effectiveness in cutting the rate of deaths due to speeding where they are used, and are extremely effective in raising revenue.
The Conservative-led Swindon Council (note) is - has been mentioned - thinking of cutting the number of cameras (no decision yet), but not because of their proven ineffectiveness. Rather, it's because - in the first place - they are not able to keep the revenue raised, and, secondly, subsequnt research that local Tories have done apparently 'suggests' there 'may' be better ways to spend the money. Road safety is clearly being put before cash and politics: there would have been no plans to cut the number of cameras if they'd been allowed to keep the sizeable revenue...Are speed cameras in the UK effective at reducing driving speeds?
Overall it has been proven that speed camera's reduce accidents however we have gone over the top and have camera's where they are likely to actually cause an accident or offend genuine motorists....I believe If you like on ROSPA website you my get real figures
A fairer system for all would be to introduce speed limiters for cars so if your in a 30 limit you may switch your cars engine to this speed or lower ..
In Northampton UK we have one of the heaviest amounts of fines as there is a speed camera on most corners ...yet its the rural roads that suffer from fatalities the most
The most effective are the average speed cameras now being used more often at road works.
By monitoring the vehicles entering and leaving the speed restricted area, the average speed can be assessed and if the speed limit has been exceeded a speeding ticket can be issued.
In my opinion this has greatly slowed down drivers who would otherwise have just sped through. Are speed cameras in the UK effective at reducing driving speeds?
They have been in use in Australia for years. They have changed most drivers behaviour, but you still get the morons who think they are the best drivers in the world and speed limits don't apply to them.
On the opening day of a Melbourne tollway a Probationary driver, (First year) was booked at more than 50kph over the 100 kph limit and thought he was a hero because he got on TV. He wasn't so happy when his car was impounded for two days and he had to pay $560 fine plus lost his licence for three months.
.
Saving ONE LIFE means they are effective.
Drivers considering they are better than any speed limit are the problem.
I have instructed drivers with many, many years experience and the majority, 90%+ do NOT know how to brake effectively in an emergency, but they thought they could.
.
No they do not reduce driving speeds drivers only slow down for the cameras then speed up again. That is why one council in the UK, i believe it to be Swindon is taking them down and will be saving 拢400,000 a year on expenses.
the one thing these cameras cause you to do is check your speedometer far too much in certain situations which has to affect your concentration on the road overall.

people know where they are slow down then right after they think they are out of range they speed up.
no. just look around..............

What are the sensors for on the traffic cams being installed on Highway 95?
I've noticed that recently, tons of traffic cameras have been installed on Highway 95 in Florida where I live. There are so many, practically every section of road will be within reach of the cams. But I also noticed that there is some sort of flat panel transducer that is pointed roughly at the road on each camera pole. What would those things be for? They remind me of the transducers used in E-Pass lanes. Could they be used to monitor our movements? What are the sensors for on the traffic cams being installed on Highway 95?

they have lasers attached in case they need to "take out" speeders. What are the sensors for on the traffic cams being installed on Highway 95?
Probably speed detectors, used to check your speed and take a picture of your plates.
SPEED SENSORS TO TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR LICENSE PLATE I BELIEVE BUT.......................

How to fight ticket from traffic camera?
I got a ticket for turning red on a red light without complete stop by a traffic camera. The ticket is for $500!! I was turning right into a train station. (BART/Cal train).
I want to fight the ticket but I'm not sure where to begin. Should I find a traffic lawyer? How to fight ticket from traffic camera?
Only method that I have ever heard that worked; was a motion that the accuser be present in the courtroom, in this case the camera. But that is only as Pennsylvania has the right to have the accuser present in their state constitution.
Best off to get a lawyer, I think.
Tickets issues by camera's are civil fines, not traffic violations. They are often contracted out to private companies that operate the cameras, collect the fines and hand over a portion of the fines to the city or county. Try calling the phone number on the citation. You may be able to haggle over the fine amount. How to fight ticket from traffic camera?
my mom had to go to court last week and they ended up dismissing tons of tickets given by cameras while she sat and waited for her turn.
Dont get a lawyer. Go to contest your ticket on your own if you don't win pay up.
Lawyers aren't cheap.
take it to court, for $500, you WILL need a lawyer, and the cop WILL show up in court for $500, get a cheap lawyer that's goodHow to fight ticket from traffic camera?
You'll need a lawyer, but it will be pretty hard to beat if they have you on film making the illegal turn.

What's the best way to deal with a traffic ticket reported by a traffic camera?
I didn't make a complete stop at a red light, and a traffic camera caught it. I can either pay the fine and attend traffic school, or hire a traffic attorney to fight for me. I hate the idea of paying between $100-$600 to a traffic attorney who's just advertising on Google to just write something up, take my money, and who knows what the odds of winning are. Should I just pay the fine and attend traffic school? What's the best way to deal with a traffic ticket reported by a traffic camera?

first..stand up. second exhale..third..PAY THE F***ING TICKET. i feel for you. :) no sense in fighting it if you did it and on what grounds would your attorney try to get you off on?
smile man, you were on candid camera pay the ticket and consider a lesson learned.
oh, by the way for all you "trying to get out of paying a ticket" people, there is a book called "How to get out of paying a ticket" at barnes and nobles. seriously, i couldnt make this stuff up.

pay it and learn not to run red lights....
the life you will save might just be your own!!!!
I have a traffic camera by my work and I kinda laugh every day
when I see some poor fool run the light and set of the camera flashes.
the intersections are well marked,
you should know they are there and be mindful of them.
Pay it.
Redlight cameras are rock solid evidence. In my jurisdiction you can even go online and look at the pictures and video of yourself running the light.
RichardWhat's the best way to deal with a traffic ticket reported by a traffic camera?
Yeah if the ticket doesn't cost that much don't bother wasting all the money on the attorney. You should have bought photoblock to spray on your license plate. Then those pesky cameras can't take pictures of your plates and they can't send you tickets.

yes
You ran the light. Pay up.
Depending on your state, you may not have to pay it. But you will have to fight it if you don't want to pay it. The law on traffic tickets in most states is that a police officer has to physically see you commit the crime to give you a ticket. The camera is not a police officer. In court you have a right to confront your accuser. They can't bring the camera to court and it can't testify. As a result, the right to confront one's accuser (habeas corpus) is violated. My best friend (a traffic lawyer) has won all of his traffic cases involving traffic cameras. You could easily fight it yourself.
You'd have a hard time fighting it. You are probably better off just paying the ticket and attending traffic school.
Just pay the fine and save yourself some money.
fight it ...you don't need a lawyer. it is unconstitutional to charge you. if the only evidence is a picture of your license plate...send a letter to the prosecuting attorney for all evidence. it is called discovery...it is his/her job to prove you were driving. a judge will throw it out every time...site a Minnesota law overturned by the state supreme court if you half to...
As an avid believer in light cameras I say pay it. I payed mine when I wasn't paying attention and following to close to a big rig. If I had been paying attention(which we all should all the time when we drive) and gave myself plenty of room between us I just may have seen the stale yellow light and therefore made a better and safer decision.

Red Light traffic Cameras?
I was stationary in my car at a set of traffic lights with a red light camera on them. However my car was positioned well over the stop line. can i get any point or a fine for this? bearing in mind my car was stationary. ThanksRed Light traffic Cameras?
No, the red light cameras are for people who run red lights with no regaurd for other pedestrians and motorists. On many of them you will be able to see a flash when it takes the picture of your cars license plates. You have nothing to worry about.Red Light traffic Cameras?

How do I find out if I got a traffic "camera" light ticket? Not sure if I did. Can I find out online?
I was driving in Long Beach and they have those traffic light cameras that can capture people speeding, running red lights, etc. I pretty sure I ran a red light "barely". Anyway the passenger in my car noticed that they had those cameras. Is there anyway I can find out if I got a ticket? Does anyone know how long they take to come in the mail. It was about 2 or 3 weeks ago.How do I find out if I got a traffic "camera" light ticket? Not sure if I did. Can I find out online?

Why did the traffic camera flash at me when I stopped at the red light?
I was approaching a traffic light and stopped at the amber light. But when it turned red the traffic camera flashed at me. I don't understand why. Does anyone know? Why did the traffic camera flash at me when I stopped at the red light?
The camera needs inputs from two sensors to take your picture. One is the red light status (must be active). The second is your car must trip the sensor at the intersection boundary. The intersection boundary is defined as the nearest curb line of the intersecting street, not the stop bar (white line or pedestrian crosswalk). It's possible that one of the sensors has failed and is always showing one as active.
In order to get the ticket, the image must show that you have entered the intersection on the red signal, and the image must show the red signal itself, not some word on the image that says the light was red. It could be argued that the sensor was faulty and was always showing the signal as red when it was not. (That would be my defense).
If they have the sensor at the stop bar, then the red light camera's only function is to generate revenue from stop bar violations, not red light violations.
You should not get a ticket based upon your posting.
I wouldn't worry about it unless you receive a ticket in the mail, which you probably won't since the camera won't be able to see your plate from that angle. It is meant to shoot cars moving through the intersection so your tags will not be in the shot.
If you do receive a ticket, just explain it to the judge. But I doubt that'll happen. Why did the traffic camera flash at me when I stopped at the red light?
It could be: An automated thing where the camera flashes at the first car so that if an accident occurs at that intersection they know who was there (if it's a hit and run) or It could be a glitch.
Don't worry too much about it unless you get booked then you have a problem!
Maybe you stopped past the point you were supposed to stop, so you ended up stopping but didn't make a lawful stop.
EDIT: You might get ticketed for that since going over it on your initial stop is illegal. It all depends on what they want to do.Why did the traffic camera flash at me when I stopped at the red light?
Probably over the line. Stop a few feet before it.

Question about Red Traffic Cameras in Los Angeles?
Hello. I have some questions about the red traffic cameras in Los Angeles. I recently was driving down La Cienga and I entered the intersection when it was green. However, as I was going through it turned yellow and then red right as I was at the end of the intersection. I saw the lights flash and I'm worried about this.
I've tried to do some research and the LAPDs website says you don't get a ticket if you pass the limit line prior to the red light turning. I understand what the limit line is, but which one are they referring to? are they talking about the one right before you enter the enter the intersection or the one at the other side below the light you are facing?
I"m just worried because I didn't purposely go through the light but it just turned as I was through it. Any help would be great.Question about Red Traffic Cameras in Los Angeles?
You entered the intersection when the light was green and while you were in the intersection it turned yellow and then red? There are only two ways that this could happen:
1) You were going so amazingly slow through the intersection that you are guilty of impeding or obstructing traffic and driving in an unsafe manner.
2) You entered the intersection while other vehicles were blocking the other side of the intersection causing you to get stuck in the middle of the intersection after the light had changed. Legally, you are not allowed to enter the intersection unless your path is clear and you are able to clear the intersection immediately.
Either way, you violated traffic laws. If they give you a ticket, you won't have much defense.Question about Red Traffic Cameras in Los Angeles?
There is only one limit line at an intersection, and sometimes it's painted, sometimes not. The LL is the first of two white lines painted before the pedestrian walkway (you will see two white lines, unless they have faded off). Also, there is a point of being too late to stop for a red light at an intersection (presuming the vehicle is traveling at the posted speed limit and there are no weather conditions to change the circumstances). This is called the "point of no return" - once this point is reached, the vehicle cannot be stopped safely, as it would end up in the middle of the intersection. You will not receive a cite in the mailQuestion about Red Traffic Cameras in Los Angeles?
In Australia it's the line as you enter the intersection, I'm sure it works the same way in LA. If you are already in the intersection when it turns red you are OK.
Red Light Cameras are supposed to catch blatent red light runners, especially where there are high rates of auto accidents.
Okay, the camera if I am correct faces opposite, since your out in California I am not sure if you have to have two license plates 1 in the front and one in the back. I am going to assume you have one. The camera faces the back of a vehicle to catch the license plate.
You have a strip where you have to stop on red and lets say you have the green and as you are seconds away from hitting this stop line and all of the sudden the light goes yellow, then red. In this situation if you are over the stop line keep going, if you can safely stop then do so.
The limit line is the one before you enter the intersection, because I believe that when the light is red for whatever direction the cameras are monitoring the cameras a note is made. The best place to check with your local Traffic Department look under government services in the phone book or consult the California Drivers Handbooktrade in value pop cap games

Do you think its good that more speed cameras and traffic light cameras are being installed?
I think they should install more traffic cameras, as to speed cameras, whats the point becuase people get use to where they are, and after the line markng, people jsut speed any way. Only people who don;t know where the camera is comming up ahead get caught, but you can see the signs. I think they should get rid of the line marking then they can catch more people. Also there are alot fo dummy decoy cameras.
Speeding cuaes so many problems, and is not even economical.
I hate when people go tru red lights. Some people don;t care and more cameras need to be installed. Peopel sound so stupdi who argue about speeding and complaining about speed cameras.Do you think its good that more speed cameras and traffic light cameras are being installed?
Agree with your comments and wholeheartedly agree that speed cameras should be positioned in different areas each day / hour
Yhe put camaras on traffic lights, on every lampost, every road..... put them on the motorway bridages to catch everone who goes over 70mph on the motorway
lets have more and more automated policing of the road transport system.... to the point where by ther eis no need for people to drive and that i should be done automatically.!.Do you think its good that more speed cameras and traffic light cameras are being installed?
On public safety yes. But from a legal standpoint no. Somebody could borrow your car and you would get a ticket but if the vehicle is owned by a fleet UPS or FEDEX for example they get off scott free. WE ARE TURNING INTO A NATION OF ONE NATION UNDER SURVEILANCE AND IS THAT THE KIND OF COUNTRY WE WANT TO LIVE IN?
Half if the speed cameras aren't even activated but they do act as a deterant...
The worse things about speed cameras are you become so paranoid about the speed your actually doing, that your eyes are on your speedo, instead of the road!Do you think its good that more speed cameras and traffic light cameras are being installed?
I expect you'd love it if the government introduced ID cards.
You are one of those slightly spooky people who love the idea of AUTHORITY watching you.
I so agree with you!
I mean obviously some ppl are in a rush and get caught but like for the ppl who do it intentionally....what the hell!!!
You are putting my friends and family at risk =[
Its an excellent idea for speeders and less accidents and less cars to worry about!
What ??????? I think they should rip the lot out and find another cash cow aside from the motorist.
I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA...LESS ACCIDENTS AND MORE AWARENESS!!
NO! i don't want to lose my hard earn cash! I hate those parking fines, speeding cameras!!!!
The lines are necessary for the camera, that's how it can tell how fast a car is going. The most effective speed cameras are the average speed checks, because you can't avoid them. I think too much emphasis is placed on speed being a killer when a lot of it is just bad driving in general. They almost give the impression that a driver who is asleep at the wheel but doing 70 is safer than a driver doing 85 who is fully awake.
Definitely agree with the traffic light cameras though. People are way too blaze about going through ambers and reds these days.
Speeding itself is not dangerous...how can you say that a well kept modern car travelling at 80mph in a dry clear motorway is dangerous?Travel on any motorway tomorrow and the VAST majority will be travelling at more than 70mph. As for being less economical....who is paying for my petrol???Me, it's MY choice.Sure, speeding past a school or a village is dangerous and these places should be targeted along with accident hotspots. Instead the money grabbing police place these cameras on long stretches of wide safe roads, ready to catch someone drifting over a ridiculously low
limit. No one minds (or should) driving at 20mph past schools and playgrounds but having to stick to 70 on a motorway or 60 on a good road is silly. These limits were set in the 60s when cars took twice as long to stop as they do now...has the limit gone up with the ability of the cars???..no.
Speed cameras are simply there to make money, otherwise why not place them in accident hotspots.
Cameras by traffic lights are a good idea. They catch bad drivers, not safe, fast drivers.
Do you support the increased use of traffic cameras to catch speeders and runners?
Personally I'm tired of hearing people complain about these cameras. Most people simply don't care about abiding by the traffic laws - most people wouldn't care if they ran over some 2 year-old toddler in a school zone. These people need to be punished.
The only people who are really opposed to these traffic cams are people who simply don't want to follow the speed limit in the first place. These people deserve to be fined anyways.
I'm all for these traffic cameras. The proceeds should be donated to charity or used to pay for roadwork (or to eliminate tolls) in order to shut up people who say they're used as a source of revenue.
If you don't want to get a speeding ticket, let me offer some very simple advice: DON'T SPEED. That just might work. Ya think?Do you support the increased use of traffic cameras to catch speeders and runners?
You and Me .. we're on the same page here .. I totally agree. There are a lot of "red light speeders" who show total disrespect to the traffic lights and signs. Having been in law enforcement myself, I used to give citation tickets to people who ignore traffic signs and lights. Like a "Stop" sign is there for decor purposes only.
So, Big Brother, right on with your speeding cameras and keep sending those speeding tickets through the mail. Road discipline is what we needed, what we need and what we will need to keep our roads safe.Do you support the increased use of traffic cameras to catch speeders and runners?
I disagree. I don't feel Big Brother is necessary. Increased revenues should be derived from increased taxes not increased traffic fines.
I don't speed, and you are grossly overgeneralizing in your statements.
Your argument is just like saying "who cares if the government is listening to all my phone calls, reading my emails, and opening my snail mail - I'm not doing anything wrong."Do you support the increased use of traffic cameras to catch speeders and runners?
You must be a liberal. I'm judging by the way you think everyone is evil and must be controlled. You think most people wouldn't care if they ran over a kid? That's a bizarre view of people.
Why don't you have a government crew follow you around and give you a ticket every time you went 1 MPH over the speed limit, or jaywalked, or didn't collect payroll taxes when you paid the kid for mowing your lawn.
When you are absolutely forced to obey, do you feel free? Or would you like to try the conservative way where we choose to do good?
I dont agree that most people would run over a two year old and not care. Two year olds can still damage your vehicle. But seriously- these cameras started at red lights and now they want to put them all over my area (Chicago) to catch speeders. I wouldnt care as long as they defined speeding as 10 miles over the posted limit- hell most people drive 5 over and what if you are going with the flow of traffic? You cant tell me you never drive a little faster on the freeway then the posted limit. They already threaten to fine people $375 for going over the limit in a work zone even when there are no workers present- like 11pm or just about anytime after 6pm.
And revenue- yeah thats what its about. Accidents are caused by people doing stupid things- like driving way over the limit or just being stupid.
One suburb removed their red light camera because it ran up 1 million dollars in one month- they said they wanted to stop accidents not generate revenue. Unfortunately most areas are greedy- and in Chicago of all places most of it just goes into the politician's pockets and doesnt help anybody.

Can I beat speeding ticket that used traffic cameras images?
I have a ticket saying that I was speeding. I reviewed the video clip that they only show my car travel and was photographed twice, nothing more. It says there are signs indicate that "speed limit is enforced with automatic traffic cameras".
1/ Is traffic cameras is an approved tool to enforce speed limit? I live in Renton, WA.
2/ What technology to verify the speed and how accurate it is?
3/ What should I say to the judge to beat the case? Obviously all they catch me is the images that were captured by the cameras that some cop review it while eating his donuts and issue me this ticket.
Thank you.Can I beat speeding ticket that used traffic cameras images?
The cameras are activated by radar that measures your speed and when you are exceeding the speed limit the camera takes the pictures and sends you a ticket, difficult to beat.}{Can I beat speeding ticket that used traffic cameras images?
The photos will also have printed on it them, the location, date, and time.
I suspect if you were to measure the distance on the road that your car traveled between the photos and had the time taken to travel that distance, there is how they have calculated the speed.
When you go to court on these sorts of matters, it is YOU who has to prove it is wrong. How can you prove it as wrong? Can I beat speeding ticket that used traffic cameras images?
There is an attorney in South Florida winning camera tickets by making the police and prosecutor follow every tit and tat of the law. Here's the story: http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovern鈥?/a>
This might work in your state also. You would need to carefully read your vehicle code to see any steps the other side is skipping. You can find the code here: http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/20鈥?/a>
If you go to court, you have to lose the attitude about donuts. The judge expects you to respect the cop and if you don't, you throw away your credibility.

If i get in a traffic accident is there a website that shows local road cameras to find out if it was my fault?
I got in a traffic accident and wanted to make sure it wasn't my fault before i perused it in courtIf i get in a traffic accident is there a website that shows local road cameras to find out if it was my fault?
They won't release that footage unless their was a fatality involved. If i get in a traffic accident is there a website that shows local road cameras to find out if it was my fault?
Not unless someone is killed or badly injured (like kenny said) or city property is Damaged/Destroyed.
they mainly only use traffic cameras for accident ALERTS (for traffics sake) flooding, road work, ect. ect.

How do I access these cameras on the webA lot corners traffic signals in my city (Oregon Ohio) have cameras mounted on them. How to watch them?
Actually, many of these "cameras" you see aren't taking pictures. They are sensors that detect vehicles at stoplights, and control the changing of the lights.A lot corners traffic signals in my city (Oregon Ohio) have cameras mounted on them. How to watch them?
You don't.
The police do.A lot corners traffic signals in my city (Oregon Ohio) have cameras mounted on them. How to watch them?
You cannot. This is for use by the City only. Many people here think that all public services and records are available online. This is not true. The tax dollars that would need to be spent to achieve this would run cities bankrupt.

Do traffic light cameras flash immediatly when the light turns red and someone passes through?
Today i went through a red but very shortly after an amber light. I am all about safe driving i never break the speed limit and i never run red lights.
But today as i was approaching a set of lights which i know are monitored by cameras a driver from behind pulled in behind me and was driving very close, as the lights turned amber i felt if i were to slam the brakes on the driver behind may go into the back of me, so i went on through, did not see a flash. I now feel very guilty and worried that 3 points might be heading my way!
Be nice to hear you're knowledge of traffic cameras rather than telling me i'm a danger to the road, because i assure you, i'm very safe.
many thanks.Do traffic light cameras flash immediatly when the light turns red and someone passes through?
The problem is not with you, and it is not with the red light camera.
The problem you experienced is a fault in the equation that determines the yellow light duration.
1. No one can stop within the time the light is yellow. The yellow duration is actually half the length of the required stopping time. Surprise!
2. Because the yellow is so short, it forces situations like yours: rear-enders.
3. The equation sets up a gamble, and then a bias for us to run red lights. The red light camera companies bank on this.
4. The author of the yellow light equation is the Institute of Traffic Engineers. ITE introduced this equation in 1965. The red light cameras, by analyzing the disparate data, simply point out the engineering defect in this equation. Truly, there hasn't been a legitimate ticket given in 45 years.
Hi, if ur in the UK go back and check the area around the lights, if theres a camera there it'll be a fixed speed camera looking thing but it'll be gray, standing seperatly to the lights(anywere up to about 15 meters away) secondly, those cameras on top of the lights are just sensors to control light changes and thirdly(and luckily for you) the camera(if there is one)is only active once the lights change to red.NOT AMBER.Do traffic light cameras flash immediatly when the light turns red and someone passes through?
Worries me when people keep saying they are a safe driver then ask a question about doing something dangerous. If you never run red lights what did you do?
You must have been approaching it too fast if you didn't have time to stop (especially as you know it has a camera) as lights give you plenty of time to stop when they change to amber. You will have the 14day wait for the NIP to come.
It depends if the traffic lights even had a camera there. If they did, yeah the government wouldn't wanna miss one split second of the light going red. 'Course the camera goes off as soon as it goes red.
Funny thing is, once I saw a camera by the traffic lights, and they were wired incorrectly, and ended up taking the pictures when the lights were green instead of red.Do traffic light cameras flash immediatly when the light turns red and someone passes through?
would help if you told which country you're from as some of the answers are from other countries.
im assuming UK as you mention points.
In this case, it only flashes if you speed through the light, if you're driving at normal pace, you SHOULD be ok!
First, lets deal with the UK law on this. Amber means STOP. Red means no vehicular traffic beyond the solid white line painted on the road. So, if you ran the red, then yes the camera would have flashed.
1;Never "Slam" on your Brakes, Slow to a Stop. 2; Yes as soon as the Amber goes off the Cameras set to flash.
You just will never know until the letter lands on the front door mat
In the UK...
Not all camera systems rely on flash now due to the high sensitivity of the digital components.
I too second the fact that UK law states amber means stop legally ...but can be intepreted as "if its safe to do so"... However if a vehicle was too close behind and you stop they are usually intepreted as to blame by both the Law and Insurers for several reasons:
-not allowing a safe distance between them and the vehicle in front
-not reading the road ahead properly (knowing that a set of lights are coming up one should ALWAYs approach with caution as you know)
-not obeying the 2 second rule (which can double the distance in the rain iirc)
There may be a plus side to this if you are fined. If they have footage and photos you can use those to back up your case that stopping would have been unsafe. Its part of the appeals process usually outlined in the letter you would get.
I got caught by a red light camera. The light turned from Amber to Red before I got all the way throught the intersection. A few months later I got the ticket in the mail. It refered me to a website where i could see the pictures. They had several pictures of before the light turned red and after it turned red. They even had a video with a timer that showed how long the light was amber before it turned Red and showed me driving through as the light changed to red.
I was only in the intersection for about 1/2 second after the light changed and they still got me.
I was in Houston Texas. The camera in UK or where ever you are may be different.

Traffic Light Cameras - What is the Law?
I recently made the mistake of driving while tired / distracted, and having stopped at front of queue for red traffic light, saw the pedestrian crossing light change to green man and moved off... at a junction with a camera. Does anyone know the law with these...
(1) is there supposed to be a warning sign on the approach to these cameras, as there usually is with speed cameras? (I'm sure there used to be a sign just before this camera, but there isn't now)
(2) am I supposed to receive a penalty notice within two weeks of the offence
(3) the camera is fairly new, with two circular lenses... do these get you from the front, behind or both? It would have to have got me from behind, as I was driving away from it
(4) this junction appears unusual in that there are two traffic lights 'at' the stop line, with no light diagonally opposite (which may be why I was looking over there and saw the pedestrian light change)... is this arrangement satisfactory or wrong?
Thanks for any answersTraffic Light Cameras - What is the Law?
you said it all "driving while tired / distracted,"
thats illegal and dangerous and highlighted on tv ads a-plenty
you did wrong, accept it and change your driving not try to pretend it was the cameras fault

NIP - Notice Of Intended Prosecution.
This is that all important bit that people keep asking me about. It pertains to the 14 day rule that surrounds service of an NIP. As with all traffic offences in the UK, an NIP is required for prosecution to proceed. If you're stopped at the scene however (for example, by a radar-gun-toting traffic policeman), then a verbal NIP is sufficient. Otherwise it must be in writing. So theoretically, if you've not heard anything after 3 weeks, you got away with it. Not, of course, that the police don't get the calculations wrong from time to time - there's no better way to knock the smile off a prosecutors face than to ask if they can prove service of an NIP.
In order to remove some of the mystery from this area - or cast it into a murky grey area depending on your view of things, here are the relevant excerpts from Butterworth's Police Law (Butterworth's Law; ISBN 0406981469). Thanks to Simon Hepworth for help with this information.
Stuff not of interest to the subject of speeding have been omitted, stuff with particular relevance to NIPs and speeding has been underlined. You'll need a stiff cup of coffee and a shedload of concentration to proceed, so go ahead and make a 6-scoop cuppa and then come on back and read on:
http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Accused_Home鈥?/a>Traffic Light Cameras - What is the Law?
if it as been more than two weeks since this happened dont worryy you have not got a ticket. the warning signs for this camera could three miles back up the road but normally there is one at almost every junction where ppl can enter the road and travel in the direction of the camera. the camera you describe is more like a speed camera from the description and finally the arrangement as you call it will be satisfactory as you put it or there would have been other complaints from the public check your local press to see if anyone as complained already
1. No warning sign needed as such - these rules apply to safety camera (speed cameras). There is usually signs in most areas.
2. Yes within 14days of the offence, HOWEVER, if it was NOT your vehicle (registered in your name) then this does not apply...some one would have to NOMINATE you as being the driver. One they have then you must receive the notice within 14days of that person nominating you.
3. Usually they are facing out of the lights, so yes would capture the vehicle from behind
4. Can't really understand what you mean here but it doesn't sound unusual. There are strict rules about these cameras and it is unlikely that there is anything wrong with the notice that has been issued to you.Traffic Light Cameras - What is the Law?
1] There is no requirement for a sign on the approach to the camera - different regulations apply from speed cameras.
2] A fixed penalty notice has to be posted to the registered keeper within 14 days - note, it doesn't say received - of the offence. There's still an option to take you to court by summons, though I'd doubt it would be applied.
3] The camera would be pointed into the junction to photograph you committing the offence, it would produce a picture normally from behind, showing the car, number plate and position in the junction.
4] There's no requirement for a light diagonally opposite, the "statutory" lights are at the stop line itself.
Hope that helps
a few point to address here,
1) warning signs
There is no legal requirement to display a warning signal.
This is set up for GATSO/ Speed camera's ONLY as the offence has certain charactaristics which do not apply to this one.
2)notice withing 2 weeks. You refer to the Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) has to be served within 14 days if they intend to prosecute you for that offence.
IF it isnt the prosecution has to prove to the court they took reasonable steps to provide this.
3)it takes pictures both ways!
4)the junctions have to be assessed by traffic management unit in both police and local council, so regardless whether you think its adaft set up, some bright spark somewheer |(rightly or wrongly ) has certified its ok. thats stands up in court.
there is no warnings for these cameras, you usually see them at the top of the traffic lights and they are used for people going through a red or amber light, they will send you out a speeding ticket for this offence.
Regarding the two lens camera. One lens checks your speed and the other one photographs your number plate.
(1) is there supposed to be a warning sign on the approach to these cameras, as there usually is with speed cameras? (I'm sure there used to be a sign just before this camera, but there isn't now)

You'll need a stiff cup of coffee and a shedload of concentration to proceed, so go ahead and make a 6-scoop cuppa and then come on back and read on:

if it as been more than two weeks since this happened dont worryy you have not got a ticket. the warning signs for this camera could three miles back up the road but normally there is one at almost every junction where ppl can enter the road and travel in the direction of the camera. the camera you describe is more like a speed camera from the description and finally the arrangement as you call it will be satisfactory as you put it or there would have been other complaints from the public check your local press to see if anyone as complained already
What are the Little black box's on top of traffic lights are they sensors or cameras?
The sit on top of lights facing front of car and are about the size of childs shoe box and have black perspex on the front my mate and i have been trying having this discussion for years i think they are just sensors he thinks they are red light cameras and i also think if the roads quiet and you flash your lights at them they change quicker can anybody tell me what they are and who is rightWhat are the Little black box's on top of traffic lights are they sensors or cameras?
ok mate i can put your mind at rest i work on the roads fixing camreas and traffic lights so when they go down we are the guys who fix them right lets get to the point they are sensors send out a beam which goes out over 5mtres and when the last car gets to or over the 5metres mark the lights will trip to green but the hick up is that when you flash your lights at them they dont trip , there is a other sensor built in which detects blue lights so when a emergancey services are goen through with blue lights on they trip to green agian. when there is a speed camrea on them they are usually on there own and you can see them painted in yellow and there must be a sign sayen so. all the traffic lights are diffrent mate you can have one with and airal on it that means its the master one damage that the rest will go out so in other words you wont get a ticket its only a sensor now you can go back to you mate and tell him that you have just had a triffic light lesson on yahoo answers lol
u know, i had this argument the other day. A friend had told me that they were sensors installed so that when emergency vehicles drive through, they sense the flashing lights and change to green so that the vehicle can get through safely. Of course, this brings up other questions like, "can they sense flashing lights when it's light outside?" Maybe when its bright out its easier for other cars to see and therefore will stop on account of the law in order to let the vehicle through, not because the light is red. I didn't believe this and so the other day at night, i flashed my brights while at a red light and the light changed...coincidence?What are the Little black box's on top of traffic lights are they sensors or cameras?
I THINK THEY'RE FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL OR SPEEDING.
DON'T REALLY KNOW BUT THEY REMIND ME OF BIG BROTHER!
they are cameras to catch you smoking, talking on phone , chucking rubbish, wearing a seat belt, to see if you,ve got that look about you that you might speed,, and if you are in possesion of an ugly woman your car will be taken and destroyed immediatley and your licence taken away
hope this helpsWhat are the Little black box's on top of traffic lights are they sensors or cameras?
They are Opticom systems to change the lights to red when activated by a Fire engine, Ambulance, Police car.
typically they are sensors to detect traffic and the need for the light to change.
They are not cameras I accidentally ran a red light at one never got a ticket.
Some are red light cams for tickets, others are for evaluating traffic flow.
The sensor boxes are usually for buses but can be used by emergency vehicles.
i'm pretty sure they're sensors thats quite a random question hehe oh well
I think that they are sensors. Shouldn't cameras that flash when you go over a red light be very visable ie. yellow? I'm sure that is the case.
They are sensors to detect traffic and keep it flowing, you also see them on pedestrian crossings (puffin %26amp; toucan)to ensure there are no pedestrians on the road before the lights change to green.
They can be a couple of things. They may be sensors that see the flashing light on emergency vehicles and change the light. They can also be sensors that detect if cars are present to control the signal timing, just like the embedded wires.
Red light cameras are usually larger and there should be a warning sign.
they are sensors....my husband is an electrician and installs them. it wont change by flashing your lights at it.
They are sensors and also timers to keep the traffic flowing ,one senors tell the other if the traffic is queueing at the lights .
The truth is that they are little cameras. My neighbor and my family are really close and he works for the government (I can't say what because I don't know!). One day we were in the car and I noticed those and I asked him. He said they are little cameras that are programmed to go one at certain days and hours. If the cameras pick up something suspicious they can turn on automatically, which is probably what is going on in your case. He said that they are everywhere in about 45 states because the others have not approved it yet.
I am sure they are sensors to help traffic flow and are not cameras because my friend went through them in an emergency and he didnt get any sort of punishment.
they are not cameras they are p.i.r. detectors (passive infra red) to change according to traffic flow ( like outside flood lights come on when you walk down your drive)
these are different to red light cameras, these couldnt flash you going through as you would be past the camera!
red lght cameras are identicle to speed cameras only they usually have 2 or more that flash similtaniously to catch all angles and the driver!
I would say camera, we have them all over here.
Red light cameras have to be clearly marked. Those black boxes are sensors.
The black boxes are the Emergency Vehicle Override boxes. They are infra-red sensors that pick up a coded signal Ambulances %26amp; such can send out to change the light to green if it would help them get through the intersection.
There was a news segement on them Here in Houston, Tx. Some guy who used to work for the company that made them stole a transmitter and was using it to speed up his commute (causing LOTS of BAD cross traffic). Turns out it's illegal to "interfere with the proper operation of a traffic signal", even if You can...
there not camera's?
They are sensors, they detect when there is a flow of traffic from a certain direction so if there is no traffic from the left then the light what detects traffic will stay green. You can set lights to detect which uses the sensors or you can set them to timed which does exactly that.... From someone who goes round the country repairing lights.....
They are sensors ,they regulate the lights to the low of traffic .

What are these strange traffic cameras?
The city I live in has some weird traffic cameras... they are mounted under the light posts, not on top and are half-sphere shaped. I don't think they are red-light cameras because every other red light camera I have seen is mounted above the light high up and not a sphere shape, but the white box-shaped ones that are obviously a camera. I think these other ones I am seeing might be traffic monitoring cameras, but I don't know what those look like and cant seem to find out, so I'm not sure. Anyone have any idea what these low mounted, half-sphere shaped cameras could be?What are these strange traffic cameras?
They are traffic monitoring 360 degree cameras. At least thats what i've been told by LEO friends. They are mounted in high traffic and high crime areas. They were smiling when they said it.
you can thank the patriot act!!
wooWhat are these strange traffic cameras?
They are all the same just that there are cheaper to expensive kinds of cameras. Just to say they take pictures of illegal driving so you know. They flash a light if someones been caught.
They are laser speed/measuring sensors used to detect when the car entered the intersection on a red light. This is so the camera does not have to take a picture with every red light. What are these strange traffic cameras?
in the St Louis area we have 2 types of traffic cams. On the freeways, they are there for accident investigations. There are also 'red light cameras'.
They automatically get your picture if you run a red light and you get a ticket in the mail, even if your friend barrows your car and runs it, you are responsible for the ticket.

Police/Traffic enforcement cameras?
What is the difference between traffic enforcement cameras and police enforcement cameras?
Or are they just the same but with different names or do they film different events to each other?
Thanks.Police/Traffic enforcement cameras?
The effect is the same thing. Go through them to fast or jump a red light at a traffic light and snap....

Traffic Ticket Cameras?
By boycotting all businesses within a half block of any red light or other types of traffic cameras that are strategically placed to generate revenue, city officials would effectively lose tax dollars in lost sales and have to put up with screaming merchants too.
That may be an effective way to fight back against big brother.
Cameras are said to help prevent accidents but they are not being placed in locations with high accident rates. They are placed where they will generate the highest revenue.
In addition to that, they also create more accidents, i.e. rear end collisions because typically the city changes the timing of the yellow light to as fast as three seconds in order to insure that extra money will be generated. People slamming on their brakes by a sudden and untimely appearance of a red light, almost instantly, causes many of us additional headaches that we don't need.
We can also slow and bottleneck traffic at these intersections by cruising through them at 10 MPH below the speed limit to assist others in not becoming victims of this added tax collection by greedy politicians.
To make this a question, I suppose I should ask, "What say ye?"
.Traffic Ticket Cameras?
I totally agree with you! I've seen what these traffic light cameras can cause! They're totally devastating traffic HAZARDS that are only being used to bring in revenue to the areas where they're located. It's also benefiting the INSURANCE Cos. by them being able to Increase Rates on the ALL the Crashes caused by these Cameras! Below is a story carried in our local paper, %26amp; reports a study done by our local University/the University of South Florida where my son is finishing his 1st yr. It fully explains my opinion on this...
Tampa, FL (March 11, 2008) -- Rather than improving motorist safety, red-light cameras significantly increase crashes and are a ticket to higher auto insurance premiums, researchers at the University of South Florida College of Public Health conclude. The effective remedy to red-light running uses engineering solutions to improve intersection safety, which is particularly important to Floridas elderly drivers, the researchers recommend. The report was published this month in the Florida Public Health Review, the online journal of the college and the Florida Public Health Association.
The rigorous studies clearly show red-light cameras don鈥檛 work, said lead author Barbara Langland-Orban, professor and chair of health policy and management at the USF College of Public Health. Instead, they increase crashes and injuries as drivers attempt to abruptly stop at camera intersections. If used in Florida, cameras could potentially create even worse outcomes due to the states high percent of elderly who are more likely to be injured or killed when a crash occurs.
Red-light cameras photograph violators who are then sent tickets in the mail. Hillsborough Co. Commissioners unanimously agreed earlier this month to install the cameras at several major intersections in the county. The devices could be adopted by more cities %26amp; counties if Florida legislators pave the way by changing a state law this spring. The USF report highlights trends in red-light running in Florida, summarizes major studies, and analyzes the automobile insurance industries financial interest in cameras. Among the findings:
* Traffic fatalities caused by red-light running are not increasing in Florida and account for less than 4 percent of the states yearly traffic deaths. In contrast, more than 22 percent of the states traffic fatalities occur at intersections for reasons other than red-light running.
* The injury rate from red-light running crashes has dropped by a third in less than a decade, indicating red-light running crashes have been continually declining in Florida without the use of cameras.
# Comprehensive studies from North Carolina, Virginia, and Ontario have all reported cameras are significantly associated with increases in crashes, as well as crashes involving injuries. The study by the Virginia Transportation Research Council also found that cameras were linked to increased crash costs. The researchers suggest local governments follow the states lead in designing roads and improving intersections to accommodate elderly drivers, which would ultimately benefit all drivers.

** The IIHS, funded by automobile insurance companies, is the leading advocate for red-light cameras. Insurers can profit from red-light cameras, since their revenues will increase when higher premiums are charged due to the crash and citation increase, the researchers say. **
Langland-Orban said the findings have been known for some time. She cites a 2001 paper by the Office of the Majority Leader, U.S. House of Representatives, reporting that red-light cameras are a hidden tax levied on motorists. The researchers suggest local governments follow the states lead in designing roads and improving intersections to accommodate elderly drivers, which would ultimately benefit all drivers.
In our city of Upland, Ca., we have had these at 3 major intersections for a long time. They are now being removed because their cost has overrode the revenue. Court fines are drastically reduced by people challenging them in court and the courts reducing the fines, sometimes below the cost of producing the ticket. Get the judges to do this more often and make it more costly to produce these tickets. Good luck to your cause.Traffic Ticket Cameras?
Did ja know that for about ten bucks + shipping you can get a wavy plate that will distort your license to the camera ONLY while others who view itwith human eyes will see it as intended.
I got one but they never got around to installing the cameras in Louisville and then I backed into something and shattered it.
They are illegal in some states so check first.
As of this writing they are still legal in KY
There are more important things to worry about than mere traffic tickets, and better things to do than waste peoples' time. There is also a critical shortage of people willing to take responsibility for their misdeeds.
It's much too easy to find ways to ruin someone else's day, and just as difficult to solve real problems affecting society.Traffic Ticket Cameras?
They only generate money in the beginning when they install the cameras. They lose money overtime because people know they are there and do not break that law. Pretty pointless
i have also noticed the thing with the yellow lights which is flat out ridiculous. where i live the yellow lights are noticeable slower than were these traffic lights are. you practically have to slam on the breaks if you are going at a normal speed. i got one and i nearly got into an accident because i didn't know what was going on. i don't know if the boycotting thing would necessarily be a good idea. i mean it's our money. it's our tax money so if the majority of the ppl don't want the lights they should probably just call their representatives and let them know that they aren't happy with it and want them removed.
Here's my view on the whole thing...pointless yet somewhat effective. I don't think it's a bad idea for safety sake, however to generate revenue...it's terrible. A.) because our police prescence should not be based on revenue but based on the motto "To Protect and Serve" When a cop pulls you over, it shouldn't be because he needs to make a buck for the revenue, it should be because of a safety violation, or law violation. However, we all know that this isn't always the case. B.) because people aren't stupid, they may not notice the prescence at first, however they WILL notice it and not break those laws....it's kind of like if you travel the same road every day for 3 years on your way to work, and every day parked next to the donut shop is a local police officer (no offense to you blue line men and women) you know they are there, therefore you always watch your speed, and focus on your driving. No problems. The same thing with the camera at the light....you know it's there you do the same....it's like having a police presence there 24/7. Only problem is.....human police officers cannot possibly catch every offender....we are human and it's impossible....The cameras however....can. Back to case at hand, can it create a safer environment, can it build revenue...yes....can it create more hazards in driving conditions, and be a major pain in the you know what....YES....Still if every driver, obeys the speed limit and rules of the road...it shouldn't be a problem..keep back at safe distances and don't run red lights, dont speed up at yellows..it means slow down and use caution.
I'm climbing off of my soapbox now....
That may be an effective way to fight back against big brother.

I would say that people use to speed up to get through a yellow light but with the cameras they slam on their brakes to avoid a ticket and then that's how they get rear ended.

Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?

Saher to be launched in Jeddah soon

JEDDAH - The Saher traffic camera system that penalizes dangerous driving through automated vehicle identification is to be introduced to the streets of Jeddah "within days", the Traffic Department has said.
The department is urging motorists to update personal information as soon as possible at the Ministry of Interior website at www.moi.gov.sa or via Traffic Department offices and car owners are asked to register the names of actual users of vehicles so that the correct person may be notified of any fines resulting from offenses recorded by Saher cameras. Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
Yes and in fact it already has. The traffic fines are significant and most people do not have the connections (or the time) to get out of paying them. Also, unpaid traffic fines are multiplied over time and if you have unpaid traffic fines you will be prevented from finishing a lot of personal business such as renewing your passport or driving license. It's a wonderful system and I look forward to its introduction in every city and town in this country.
EDIT:
Have you ever heard of anyone using a "connection" to get out of a 300 riyal traffic ticket? I certainly haven't. Anyway, the number of people powerful enough to get out of traffic tickets is NEGLIGIBLE compared to the actual number of drivers, and those people rarely ever drive themselves. If their drivers or employees get tickets, they make that person pay for it. A Rich and Powerful Person is not going to pick up a phone and bother people over a small traffic fine. Even Wasta has its rules of etiquette.
As for traffic cops stopping people, well I can tell you that for the past 3 years in Riyadh, I have almost NEVER driven for more than 10 minutes without seeing at least one car (usually 2 or 3) stopped by the traffic cops, especially on the highways.
it has seriously made a difference! my mom recently came to riyadh and when we drove out of the airport thie first thing she noticed was how calm the drivers were driving! my dad then told her about the cameras and the fine. She thought it was a brilliant idea! it has really disciplined the saudi traffic (in riyadh) My mom even said ''If the traffic continues like this, they might even let women drive!'' ha!Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
sure it will affect them. in riyadh no body is driving fast anymore. also
the good thing is the teickt is regesterd auto no one can add or delet it.
am sure it will affect but it will take time.
no effect on drivers all r driving in same old horrible way. Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
if a sitting cop at the intersection wont effect a driver.. why would a camera...
yes. Guy.. you are correct.. but still.. its who you know.. us non connected folks will still suffer while the connected few will prevail and get off
will the intersection cameras.. stop
all the people running stop "signs"
all the speeders
the ones who want to turn left from the far right lane
the taxis who see a patron on the side of the road and they zoom across 3 lanes of traffic without warning to stop dead on the highway to pick up a patron
those that stop dead on the highway and drive fast backwards to get back to the turn off they missed
those that drive down a one way street cause its just quicker
the double and triple parking downtown
etc etc?
probably not.. until that standing cop on the side of the road gets out there and actually does stop these infractions..

Should traffic lights and box junctions be fitted with cameras instead of speed cameras?
The government has lifted a requirement that speed cameras only be fitted to areas where speeding has been proven to be a cause of accidents. This will mean they can be placed virtualy anywhere for councils and the police to make money. Though speed kills I think the majority of motorists would prefer they were placed at red lights and box junctions instead as they would have more of a preventative effect which would also improve traffic flow - what do you think?Should traffic lights and box junctions be fitted with cameras instead of speed cameras?
Most traffic lights and many major yellow-box junctions are already fitted with cameras...
I once got a speeding ticket for doing 33 in a 30 zone with a camera... it was cheaper to pay the fine then to take time off work and go to court.
P.S It was 3:30 in the morning when the camera took the picture so I think it's safe to say it was more of a revenue thing than a safety issue.Should traffic lights and box junctions be fitted with cameras instead of speed cameras?
Where speed is cause of accidents? Hmmmm. Who makes that judgement. Most accidents have speed as a contributing factor. Used very liberally as if the car did not move it would not have an accident.
University of Arkansas is now doing a study on this speed as a contributing factor of accidents and the initial indication is that speed is often over contributed to accidents. This study is being done for laws being proposed for truck drivers.
Studies have shown the after installing cameras at red lights, accidents have increased (rear ends),, but because these cameras often generate a quarter a million a year is reason enough for most councils to proceed to this method anyway and now should be charged with contributing to the accident.
Speed cameras fail to catch the tailgaters, people who use mobiles and drive dangerouslyShould traffic lights and box junctions be fitted with cameras instead of speed cameras?
Speed cameras would be better at traffic lights. This used to be the case for one or two traffic lights in Nottingham.
Traffic cameras should not be allowed to be used anywhere until the technology is developed to find out who is driving the vehicle. At this point in time (and correct me if i'm wrong), the owner of the vehicle gets the ticket...not the driver at the time the picture was taken. You loan your car to a bud and he violates the law, it's your butt. Very wrong here!
Yes some silly drivers block the boxes and make traffic jams worse
Neither should be used.
traffic flow would only improve if everyone looks at lights and simultaneously move oh don't forget the car in front of you as for cameras at lights too many people would emergency brake at amber
box junctions i agree more cameras
speed cameras well how many people have you followed for example when it's a 50 limit and they are doing 50 but all of a sudden slow down instantly to speeds of40 they need help it's dangerous

Do those traffic cameras come on when they turn yellow or when red if/when a car drives over the sensor?
Most of them are VIDEO cameras that are on constantly. When the sensor is triggered, the recording is flagged for review by an officer. If the officer determines a violation occurred, a ticket is issued.
Why are there so many speed cameras and traffic police present in Europe?
Same here in australia. Its a easy fundraiser for the government and sell you crap about how it reduces accidents and saves lives. It is doing the opposite everyone is looking at their speed all the time instead of the road. I wish I was a Autobody repairer damn it!Why are there so many speed cameras and traffic police present in Europe?
Here in the UK they use the excuse of increasing safety and reducing the accidents for the increase in cameras. However whilst the numbers of cameras have increased the numbers of dedicated traffic police have reduced. Which means the chances of catching drivers who are drunk, drugged or driving more dangerously are reduced. hence the cameras are only being used so they can fleece the motorist for cash to add to the government coffers.
there was a surplus of woodentops in the police stations so they made them go out and play , unfortunately at our expense
cameras are just a cheaper alternative to answer one with higher returns on the investment , come to think of it there must be a way i can set a camera up in my village and try for a takeover bid .elevated income here i come !!! ( or more likely jail when they twig )Why are there so many speed cameras and traffic police present in Europe?
The theory is that if you can. Deprive criminals of transport or lock them up for car crime the crime rate will drop the theory goes that criminals aren't just say a burglar but they don't respect any law be it tax speeding or car insurance and the anpr plus speed care as and patrols will catch them more easily on a road than breaking in to your house
Like everyone says, "SAFETY" CAMERAS are put on the roads where most accidents occur. Theres one on a main road near me (mobile van) every few weeks yet ive never seen an accident there in my life. Why are there so many speed cameras and traffic police present in Europe?
To steal money from innocent motorists.

Are traffic ticket cameras legal?
I heard about cameras that are triggerd to take a picture of your plate if you are speeding. Then you get a speeding ticket in the mail. Is this leagal? Are traffic ticket cameras legal?
Yes these cameras are legal.
Ours will also take an identifying picture of the driver, in case you try to say that "I wasn't driving the car".
Ours also posts the radar readout on the bottom of the photographs.
yes, they are all over AZAre traffic ticket cameras legal?
It seems so since the police are issuing tickets via the traffic cameras and so far no court I know of has objected or declared them unconstitutional.
We wouldn't be using them if they weren't legal.
Drive safely and you'll have nothing to worry about. Are traffic ticket cameras legal?
Violates the 6th amendment but the government has been getting good at violating our rights lately.

Can you be fined from just a regular traffic camera?
ok, so here is the scenario:
Someone is driving and the stoplight before the person turns red, the person stops and waits.
While waiting, the person starts talking to the passenger. the arrow light turns green and the vehicle beside the person starts to go. the person hasn't been paying much attention so the person starts going. the light for forward/on going traffic is still red. the person realizes this but panics and keeps going through the red light.
there are no red-light traffic cameras, but of course there are the standard traffic cameras present at every stoplight.
can the person be fined from just the regular traffic camera, or can the person only be fined if there is a red-light camera present, that catches the violation?
and no this didn't happen to me, it happened to a friend of mine and im curious as to whether or not she'll get a ticket.
thanks in advance for answering! :)Can you be fined from just a regular traffic camera?
Not sure where you live so the answer could vary.
I know in California there are not traffic cameras at every, most, or almost any intersection. As for getting a ticket from one, absolutely not. The rules are very strict for traffic cameras in this state and a random uncertified set up would not be valid. Can you be fined from just a regular traffic camera?
The way I understand it is, when the ligjt turns red the camera catches a image if their is movement. I think your okay if it has been red for a while. I have had more tickets than I can count for running a yellow light that turns into red.

FL DRIVERS? DO TRAFFIC CAMERAS CATCH ILLEGAL LEFT TURNS?
Today I was in the left turning lane in an intersection and for some reason I forgot my driving rules. There was nobody coming on, so I did the turn even though there was a little red arrow. This was a really dumb mistake, I didn't get pulled over. I am wondering if a traffic camera would catch something like this?FL DRIVERS? DO TRAFFIC CAMERAS CATCH ILLEGAL LEFT TURNS?
If there is a 'red light' camera at the intersection, it should catch you going though the intersection when the light is red. As MOST intersections don't have the cameras, we can only GUESS about the one you ran. Also note: there is not a state in the US that uses the same camera system state-wide.

Should we vote traffic light cameras out of existence?
There is no bigger pain than to receive a ticket in the mail for a traffic violation that happened weeks ago. Or worse, to receive a bunch of tickets in the mail for a car you sold two years ago (that happened to me).
We pay our police to enforce traffic laws, and there is no better judge of a traffic stop than a veteran police officer. The actual driver of the car, not you who sold the car to him. gets the ticket as it should be.
And besides, do we really want some computerized Orwellian police state sending us machine-issued tickets and fines just to better fund our city governments.
I say we get rid of this nonsense and write our legislators today at www.congress.org
Thoughts?Should we vote traffic light cameras out of existence?
Sure let's... just as soon as all drivers in North America obey all traffic laws.
I am an officer and I hate cameras. Every now and then, someone has a legitimate reason for breaking the law and I don't think every one who runs through an intersection deserves a citation.
As for getting tickets for a car you sold. In my state (Missouri) it is against the law to give someone your tags. So if you sell a car, you should remove your tags and make them get their own. You probably already know that after your ordeal, but those laws are for your protectionShould we vote traffic light cameras out of existence?
I don't care for the cameras, but since I don't speed and obey signals I have never been cited and have no cause to complain.
one thing that I would like to know, how could you be cited for violations by the driver of a car you no longer own? license plates or title still in your name perhaps?
The real reason to eliminate traffic cameras is that it was a solution for a problem that failed to achieve its goal.
It was supposed to reduce the number of traffic accidents by acting as a dissuasive agent. The number of accident at traffic lights has not decreased and the cameras have been in use for many years.
Bureaucrats just want to throw more money to the problem because every dollar spent is 80 cts to support bureaucrats, plus the income from tickets.Should we vote traffic light cameras out of existence?
Stop complaining...here is this...you are at a stop light, yours turns green, you go forward the other guy runs his light and t-bones you, flees the scene...no witnesses, and now cause of you no camera...idiot
Well just because you don't own the car anymore doesn't mean you weren't speeding. What's wrong with it funding the city government when you were speeding in that city which is against the law? Yes, cops are good at issuing tickets, but that doesn't mean that they can't use a little help from the cameras as a deterrent to speeders who can cause accidents...
I hate the cameras!
Traffic Light Cameras are a good thing. They force people to slow down and think twice before running a red light. They save lives.
Yes there are many cases where speed traps or misleading or hidden signs are put up deliberately to trap people and extract money from them. But traffic light cameras are not one of them.
Good luck. Traffic cameras have nothing to do with reducing accidents or safety. Traffic cameras are for one thing, and one thing only - revenue. That's it. And frankly it's a lot cheaper (and a lot fairer) to have a machine issuing tickets than some dumb cop, who thinks that his bottom feeder job has granted him god-like powers to enforce or not enforce laws as he sees fit. I hate all enforcers of traffic laws, be they stupid human sor machines, but good luck getting legislatures to turn down a big revenue making mechanism like traffic cameras.

Do traffic cameras cause rear end collisons?
Due to people slamming on brakes
instead of going thru the yellow light.Do traffic cameras cause rear end collisons?
"you can proceed through a yellow light as long as you complete before the light turns red"
Unfortunately, human skill in predicting multiple variables, (time left on the yellow, distance needed to clear the intersection, speed of other cars in front of you) takes time to develop. This skill is often complicated by other factors, like weather, the physical state of the driver, number of distractions, etc. When municipalities monitor human drivers with "perfect" computerized cameras, the human driver will, on average, fail the test. Drivers who would normally drive safely will overcompensate to remain within the limits of the camera system. Drivers who would normally drive recklessly will further endanger the safety of others through rear-end collisions; they will assume that other drivers share in their degree of skill in driving through yellow lights.
Answer: Hire human observers (police) to catch lawbreakers.
There are those who run a red light because they have poor skill and there are those who run a red light because they are lawless. Both receive the same penalty, only, the latter is much more of a risk to other drivers.
yes traffic cameras are the work of the devil destroy them allDo traffic cameras cause rear end collisons?
No, stupid drivers cause collisions. Pay attention, and slow down when you see a yellow light.
Even if they did, it would be worth having quite a few more rear end collisions to cut down on t-bones caused by people running lights.Do traffic cameras cause rear end collisons?
Poor driving habits cause accidents, not cameras.
Traffic cameras may be part of it but it certainly stems from the abilty and alertness of the driver. People often blame techonolgy, Don't blame blame technology if you fail to pay attention.
It is both unattentive drivers and people following too closely.
It is quite legal to go through a yellow light. It takes an attentive driver to know if he/she is too close to be able to safely stop.
No idiot drivers who slam on their brakes instead of going through yellow lights do.

right every one get the still saws out and lets put a end to these evil twisted things.. lets see who can cut down the most hehehehehe hahahahahah
i like shooting the lens with a pellet gun, they break and usually shater on the second shot. then it takes the city 2 months to fix it again. i tried tape and the workers peeled it off and cleaned it 2 or 3 days later and i`d rather shoot it than paint it.
why would you allow yourself to drive in a manner consistant to almost haveing or having a rear end collision. You shluld be able to control your vehcile at all times

Access traffic light cameras?
I need to know who I need to contact in order to get access to view a traffic light camera that might have recorded an accident in which I was blammed for. I know that the traffic light camera, if recording at the time, would have caught it on tape. If anyone has ever had a problem like this and this is how they went about solving it, please give me some advice. I've thought about hiring a lawyer, but the damage to my car is not really that bad, but it's just the point that the other person involved lied about what really happened.Access traffic light cameras?

Mobile Traffic Cameras?
I went past this guy in a high visibility jacket yesterday on an A road in England and he was looking into a small camera and then there was a bit of wire that went to another small camera, the type that you got in the mid 1990's. It was on a tripod but wasn't like any of the mobile speed cameras ive ever seen, both cameras were completely bare and not in the usual yellow boxes or those hand held hairdryer types, and the guy was not a Police Constable.
What do you think this camera was for? Monitoring the volume of Traffic for council records? Mobile Traffic Cameras?
Sounds like he was doing a survey of the land. Mobile Traffic Cameras?
I wouldnt worry , in the UK , if you are caught with a handheld device , there is always officers further on the route to pull you and advise you and give you a ticket.

How do the traffic cameras know when to take the pictures.?
they have sensors for when it turns red and it always takes a picture. How do the traffic cameras know when to take the pictures.?
Last week there was an accident at the intersection and cops were directing the traffic. I was coming down the intersection as the cop was waving the traffic thru and I noticed that the camera on opposing lane was constantly taking pictures once every second or so because it was activated by red light. It was noticeable because of flash even on a sunny day. So my guess is that the camera has a sensor linked to red light. What I don't know is how it differentiates the vehicles moving from left to right on green against vehicles moving up to down. How do the traffic cameras know when to take the pictures.?

If you have not gone through the intersection by the time the light hits red then the camera snaps you and you get a ticket in the mail usualyy within 1-3 business days.
I'm guessing that it takes pictures every second, or even less.

Movie from traffic cameras?
Can someone name the movie that was taken from the point of view of a bunch of cameras; traffic cams, cop cams, security cams, etc? One part I remember is about the manager of the storage department of a department store having sex with all of the female employees, and also a teenage girl who seduced her teacher and after he yelled at her, she said he raped her?Movie from traffic cameras?

What are the cameras on traffic lights for?
Some are the so called "red light" cameras, that will record those vehicles that go thru the intersection on a non green signal light; others are for monitoring the flow of traffic and / or crime controlWhat are the cameras on traffic lights for?
They are set up to catch anyone who passes the light when it is on red that way they get the license plate and mail them a ticket. What are the cameras on traffic lights for?
If you answer a question you need to have the answer. The are NO Weight sensor in the road to change lights. Look and you see the back line that shapes the retangle. They cut the tar and then run wire around that rectange many times which creates a magnetic field when electric is run throught it. When a large metal item, car, is in that area the magnetic induction is altered and that is the sensor that tells the traffic controller there is a vehical there. Now we use cameras to sence cars. Its cheaper and much easier to maintain. The sensor in this question, above the light itself is for Emergency Vehicals allowing them to have better access to the intersection. One person answered this correcly already and one completely wrong and that answer has a vote. Go with facts not guesses. Dave, Tx. DOT.

What are your thoughts on automatic traffic tickets, issued by cameras and robots for moving violations?
Unfortunately it has become necessary even if I do not like them.
Too many people drive intentionally reckless and endanger other drivers and joggers, bicyclists etc.
The problem is machine have no mercy - 35mph is 35, whereas a cop may know cars drift in speed a little due to driver's watching the road and conditions - not staring at the speedometer. Running red lights on a short cycle, a cop can watch the cycle and say yes or no it was a signal issue or not, a bot just writes the ticket.
Still if people where not dangerous to the general public there would be no need for even cops. Rules and laws are there to protect society from the few self centered and empowered self elite who feel the laws do not apply to them.
For the ones who think it is just for the money, they are the self centered ones, check the list of dead children caused from these taxpaying self elite. What are your thoughts on automatic traffic tickets, issued by cameras and robots for moving violations?
There's no substitute for an actual human Peace Officer (as opposed to revenuers) for traffic safety. While I don't mind so much cameras for red light enforcement, the speed trap scameras are just another revenue scheme used by officials and their corporate sponsors to stuff the revenue box.
Additionally there's plenty of evidence that the speed trap scameras cause more crashes because people learn that there isn't an actual officer to chase them, so they drive even faster between the scameras then jam on their brakes right before the trap zone, causing more crashes. What are your thoughts on automatic traffic tickets, issued by cameras and robots for moving violations?
I think they are good in theory, but practically there are many downfalls, since they are just machines, and can't take into account the actual traffic/environmental situation. For example. I got a red light ticket one time, but the stop line was almost complete worn off, there was snow/ice all over the road, and it was dark, so according to the traffic camera my front bumper crossed the stop line by a few inches, but I find it ridiculous considering the weather and road condition.
I think they should stick to just speed cameras...I have noticed traffic slows down considerably in speed camera areas. Although this could also have problems of it's own...imagine if you had to accelerate to avoid a collision or getting rear-ended...What are your thoughts on automatic traffic tickets, issued by cameras and robots for moving violations?
I don't think they are particularly just. There is no evaluation if a given situation. Sometimes a vehicle gets stuck in an intersection thru no fault of the driver due to any number of reasons and the camera will simply issue the ticket whereas an officer could make an individual judgement.fashion week 2011 california academy of sciences

Question about cameras on traffic lights?
You know those camera that can take a picture of you if you run a red light, then you get something in the mail later and a ticket.? Can any random intersection have a camera like that or does it need to be posted? I am referring to the state of California..please any help? Or links?Question about cameras on traffic lights?
California code requires either that the individual intersections have clear signs indicating that an automated ticketing system is in place or that there be signs at every major entrance to the city stating that automated ticketing systems are used in the city.
Also, the small cameras without any flash equipment seen on top of almost every signal pole are NOT red-light cameras. They are used to monitor traffic and adjust signal times.
i believe they have to post it, but you never know in California! Im from canada ontario and there all postedQuestion about cameras on traffic lights?
No they are random of course you can easily see them on top of the pole by the red light.
Yes, they will have a small sign around the traffic light with a camera on it. They cant just have a camera without you knowing about it...Question about cameras on traffic lights?
In obtaining your license, you agree to ALL law enforcement methods.
As far as i know every traffic light on a busy intersection will have one. And they never post it.
Most cameras on traffic lights serve as a detection for the lights to change timing automatically.
I know they can also take pictures, but more than likely they are just there to change the timing of the lights.

Do TRAFFIC WARDENS carry cameras to take pictures of your offense and how do I get out of my parking ticket?
How do I get out of my parking ticket? Apparently, I was parked on blue lines on an estate in Nottigham, England which means residents parking and I got a ticket. There are no signs to say waht the blue lines are for but it does have a sign saying residents parkign only (I was a guest of a resident). I have taken picture of my vehicle parked away from the blue lines and wonder if i can use the 'My word against theirs' route. Any advice would be very much appreciated...Do TRAFFIC WARDENS carry cameras to take pictures of your offense and how do I get out of my parking ticket?
Many traffic wardens do carry cameras now and take photographs of the vehicle both close up to include the tax disc and from various angles to show the exact parking position and the license plate as well.
The cameras have a time and date stamp built in to them to ensure that you cannot claim the picture was taken at a time when restrictions did not apply.
I cannot tell you if Nottingham wardens carry these cameras or indeed if the pictures were taken on this occasion.
I can however tell you that if you appeal against the ticket and are found to make a knowingly false statement you can be prosecuted and it will cost you very much more than the fine.
If you come back and the warden has just started writing the ticket you can drive off and then claim that the warden is making it up and you were never parked illegally.
As long as they do not have your tax details or a photo then there is no way they can prove you are lying.
You may still have to pay the fine but you can do so, "under protest" and refuse to admit guilt.
If you were issued with the ticket in your absence you can ignore it but only if you have the guts to go through with the next bit.
They will write to you some months later, saying that the fine has been increased.
You write back and swear that you never got a ticket, and that if a ticket was ever issued it must have been taken off by kids mucking about or it had not been properly fixed to the windscreen.
You insist on being given an opportunity to pay at the reduced rate and question the validity of the ticket itself as you have no recollection of ever having parked illegally.
Since they cannot prove the ticket was there when you got back they cannot prove you are lying.
So they write back and either
1. Say that the ticket may have been issued incorrectly and that you need take no further action.
2. They insist that the ticket was issued correctly but give you the opportunity to pay the reduced rate one more time.
You may then pay the reduced rate which you should have paid six months ago which is great.
it is petty victories over the authorities like this that keep me going
unfortunately they do have cameras now so you probably wont be able to get out of it sorryDo TRAFFIC WARDENS carry cameras to take pictures of your offense and how do I get out of my parking ticket?
they don't and you can't, just pay up youv'e been caught
yes they do carry camera's well most of them do, you can get parking tickets from eBay,hope that helps, all the best.go to your local cab office, they are great, they will help you all the way.Do TRAFFIC WARDENS carry cameras to take pictures of your offense and how do I get out of my parking ticket?
Sell the car and deny all knowledge of the offense after you cleverly alter the date on the receipt that you give to the new owner
To be honest, I would say it isn't worth it. As crap as it is for you, if you did go for it and refuse to pay it then you could eventually get sent to court, then you would have to lie in court and that wouldn't be good.
You will get done for a much more serious charge if you are found to have lied in court not to mention the court charges you would have to pay. Is it really worth it? Just accept you were wrong and pay your fine!
I believe a guy somewhere knew all the tricks and his rights so he would deliberately get tickets and appeal. He won the appeals so the traffic wardens were told not to ticket his car.
One was that double lines should be complete (not broken) and finish off to the kerb with a short line joining the two lines together.
Forget it! it usually works out cheaper to pay up sooner rather than argue.
Yes, you could try and use the 'my word against theirs' route but they do take pictures, which the council would just send copies of to you. Somebody tried this with me once when I was a traffic warden. He took photos on his phone about an hour after he had been booked and wrote in a letter saying 'I dont know what your warden had been taking but my car wasnt anywhere near those lines' the council sent him a letter back saying they didnt know what he had been taking thinking he could get away with that but heres the picture proving his car was on the lines.
best advice in this case is probably to pay up, because 2 weeks from the date of issue, the fine goes up to 拢60 then two weeks later its 拢95 and before you know it theres a guy with a van outside your house to take away your furniture
They do take pictures yes with date and time on it, they're not that daft. I don't think you'll get away with it, they usually win.
Yes of course Traffic Wardens carry cameras, its a well known fact. And no you cannot get out of not paying for a ticket. If you park without paying or anywhere where you shouldnt, then you will get a fine.
No, I don't think they carry cameras. And usually you can get out of a ticket by simply showing up for your court date--because the officer who gave the ticket usually doesn't show up; and in that case, the court has to drop the ticket.
They take loads of pictures, one of the number plate, one of the sign, one of the car on the lines and one of the ticket on the car!!the only way to get out of it is if the warden isn't wearing his hat!!
yes they do for evidence fixed penalty label has been place on winscreen silver fox
I watched a traffic warden give a ticket the other day and he took loads of photos of the car from all sides and also of the sign.
They don't miss a trick unfortunately.
just face up to the fact you parked illegally, be a man and pay the fine and take it as a lesson learnt
Yep they do have cameras but you should see the photo!!
Not exactly 'David Bailey' I am afraid you will find this one hard to 'get out of it' if the sign states residents parking' there is usually a permit for the vehicle. if no permit area the traffic warden would find it hard to prove you are not a resident!
I have a disability badge which the traffic warden said the expiry date was not clear to be read ! No word of a lie the traffic warden had really thick glasses ...he also took a photo.. i asked for a copy of the photo .you couldn't even tell it was a car let alone read the badge from the photo!
I WON!! nah nah
I Hate traffic wardens!
More and more traffic wardens are given digital cameras as standard, and they use this for evidence. You'll struggle to dispute photographic evidence.
