What are the sensors/cameras on crossing traffic lights for?

Evening all,

Just wondering what they are. I don't mean the big grey cameras (or speed cameras for that matter). It seems a lot of crossings have a handful of little black boxed sensors/cameras on them. Are they for monitoring traffic flow/catching people who jump the lights/traffic report videos/etc?

Cheers for any help, the curiosity is bugging me senseless.

If you are asking about a pelican crossing, the sensors come into play when a pedestrian pushes the button to cross.the sensor detects the amount of moving traffic flowing before it stops it.allowing the pedestrion to cross. On normal traffic lights the sensors detect were vehicles are stationary, and halts the flow of traffic, and allows the stationary traffic to proceed.
The ones pointing at the crossing? They're just to monitor if anyone is actually using the crossing so the delay can be tweaked. Not cameras, they're just sensors. What are the sensors/cameras on crossing traffic lights for?
they're just sensors so to monitor the traffic and pedestrians

they're not cctv cameras or ones to catch red light runners
