You actually answered your own question. Red light cameras are designed to take a picture of your rear plate. Some jurisdictions require plates front and back, and some only on the back. That's why the picture is taken of the back. What happens is that the camera will only take the picture of the rear plate of a car that *enters* the intersection *after* the light turns red. That means that if you are already in the intersection even a few feet when the light turns red, the camera will *not* take your picture. Therefore, for them to see the back of your car (i.e. rear plate) the light had *already* turned red *before* you entered the intersection. It's actually set up to give you a big break ... you won't get a ticket for running a yellow light. I hope this explains it better for you. I've seen people go to court and say the light was yellow when they entered the intersection, a statement that any prosecuter can blow out of the water. If you get a ticket and picture of your car in the mail, take a look and you will see the light is red and your plate is visible. Don't waste your time going to court ... just pay the ticket. License plate is on record with the DMV. They merely trace it back to you... took North Carolina three months to find us for our ticket... yay for moving!
