JEDDAH - The Saher traffic camera system that penalizes dangerous driving through automated vehicle identification is to be introduced to the streets of Jeddah "within days", the Traffic Department has said.

The department is urging motorists to update personal information as soon as possible at the Ministry of Interior website at www.moi.gov.sa or via Traffic Department offices and car owners are asked to register the names of actual users of vehicles so that the correct person may be notified of any fines resulting from offenses recorded by Saher cameras. Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
Yes and in fact it already has. The traffic fines are significant and most people do not have the connections (or the time) to get out of paying them. Also, unpaid traffic fines are multiplied over time and if you have unpaid traffic fines you will be prevented from finishing a lot of personal business such as renewing your passport or driving license. It's a wonderful system and I look forward to its introduction in every city and town in this country.

EDIT:

Have you ever heard of anyone using a "connection" to get out of a 300 riyal traffic ticket? I certainly haven't. Anyway, the number of people powerful enough to get out of traffic tickets is NEGLIGIBLE compared to the actual number of drivers, and those people rarely ever drive themselves. If their drivers or employees get tickets, they make that person pay for it. A Rich and Powerful Person is not going to pick up a phone and bother people over a small traffic fine. Even Wasta has its rules of etiquette.

As for traffic cops stopping people, well I can tell you that for the past 3 years in Riyadh, I have almost NEVER driven for more than 10 minutes without seeing at least one car (usually 2 or 3) stopped by the traffic cops, especially on the highways.
it has seriously made a difference! my mom recently came to riyadh and when we drove out of the airport thie first thing she noticed was how calm the drivers were driving! my dad then told her about the cameras and the fine. She thought it was a brilliant idea! it has really disciplined the saudi traffic (in riyadh) My mom even said ''If the traffic continues like this, they might even let women drive!'' ha!Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
sure it will affect them. in riyadh no body is driving fast anymore. also

the good thing is the teickt is regesterd auto no one can add or delet it.

am sure it will affect but it will take time.
no effect on drivers all r driving in same old horrible way. Will traffic cameras affect drivers in Saudi Arabia?
if a sitting cop at the intersection wont effect a driver.. why would a camera...

yes. Guy.. you are correct.. but still.. its who you know.. us non connected folks will still suffer while the connected few will prevail and get off

will the intersection cameras.. stop

all the people running stop "signs"

all the speeders

the ones who want to turn left from the far right lane

the taxis who see a patron on the side of the road and they zoom across 3 lanes of traffic without warning to stop dead on the highway to pick up a patron

those that stop dead on the highway and drive fast backwards to get back to the turn off they missed

those that drive down a one way street cause its just quicker

the double and triple parking downtown

etc etc?

probably not.. until that standing cop on the side of the road gets out there and actually does stop these infractions..
