I am a Canadian and was vacationing in Australia recently. Rented a van, and got a speeding ticket (caught by a traffic camera). The Rental company charged a admin fee and mailed me my tickets. Do I need to pay the tickets and what is the consequence for ignoring?

ThanksDoes a canadian have to pay australian traffic violations/speeding tickets?
yes you have to pay for the tickets YOU got
if you ignore they will have your license suspended
If you fail to pay the ticket and the rental company has nominated you as the driver then what will happen is that after 28days and n payment being made then a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Now that being said you are in Canada so that the warrant will mean nothing, unless of course you want to come back to Australia, then getting a Visa or gaining entry may be a problem. It becomes a question of good character and that is a basis for refusal for entryDoes a canadian have to pay australian traffic violations/speeding tickets?
If you refuse to pay the tickets they will issue a default judgement of guilty and bill the rental agency. The rental agency will then bill your credit card number that they already have on file and you will end up paying the tickets anyway....and a much larger amount no doubt.
If you then dispute the charge with your credit card company the rental agency will show them the contract you signed when you rented the car that says that you will be responsible for any tickets or extra charges like that and your credit card company will tell you that you are on the hook for the ticket costs.
Your choices are to pay them now while they are the standard fines or not pay them, get found guilty by default, and have to pay the larger amount they will no doubt charge AND the fees the rental agency puts on top of it all.
The concept you refer to is called reciprocity and in this day and age it would be very easy for the Australian court or magistrate the ticket is issued from to contact the DMV or RMV that issues your drivers license and request that you be suspended as you are in default. I know that in the U.S. this would be done instantly as the authority issuing your license would expect the same courtesy and there would be a reinstatement fee levied on you, so your local DMV would get money out of the deal. You could not appeal as you were the one to default. I have seen this done by western European countries contacting the Massachusetts RMV, and in every case the Mass. RMV honors the request of a foreign authority, as hefty reinstatement fines are imposed. These things do tend to follow you around.
It might be different in Canada, but is it worth the risk of losing your license?Does a canadian have to pay australian traffic violations/speeding tickets?
depends if you ever want to come back, yes you do have to pay , for you if you never go back there are no consequences, normally they just debit your credit card your lucky
Of course not !
Being a Canadian , you`re automatically immune and exempt from all laws ......... wherever you travel !!
I`d be willing to bet you vote Liberal too , eh ????
If you have Integrity----well, guess that is a moot statement isn't it.
