Is the sensor on top of the traffic light a camera?

My arabian son pointed it out the other day when we were driving together. Is the sensor on top of the traffic light a camera?
Yes , and camera flash light will work if you pass pedistrain lines. Is the sensor on top of the traffic light a camera?
Most are stobe sensors and if you have a handheld flood light you can test them out. Sweep the beam back and forth across the sensor.

Some make all 4 dirrections go RED, so the emergecy vehicles can slip past on the wrong side of the street, and others hold the GREEN light so they can move with the traffic. In some cities, the GREEN hold is even used on the busses, which typically stop just short of the corner to unload passengers, and hold up all the cars behind them. We've had them in LA for about 40 years. Is the sensor on top of the traffic light a camera?
No. It's an infrared sensor. It is used by emergency vehicles approaching the light to turn the light green. They have a special transmitter to do that.
In my town in northern CA it is a camera on the top of the traffic light.
