How does a Red Traffic Light Speed Camera work? Does it catch cars jumping red lights or even speeders?

There is a red traffic light speed camera outside my house and its a grey box just before traffic lights crossing. Does this mean that it catches motorists jumping red lights and record their speed or even when they are not jumping red light and just speeding.

the camera does a few things.



1. it checks how many cars are waiting or coming to the traffic light so it decides if it should keep the red light longer or change r whatever.

2. catches people who skip red lights

3. any cars speeding over the speed limit
There are now cameras that detect red light offences and speeding. This is to deter people from accelerating through the amber. However these have to be yellow to concur with government guidelines. Red light cameras can be grey and can only be triggered when a red light has been displayed. The actual timing of the trigger is determined by the police but can be as short as 0.5 seconds.

It is activated as soon as the lights turn red, but only flashes if a vehicle passes over the induction loop - basically a rectangle of wire placed just below the road surface. You can set the camera off by moving any metallic object over the "wires". As long as the vehicle does not fully pass the red light, it is unlikely any ticket would be issued as it would have stopped
If it's just a red light camera, it's activated a fraction after the lights have gone red and then snaps any vehicle going over the crossing. That's all it does.

When the red light is on, the camera is live and activated by a vehicle passing the lights.
