i thought they were just there to detect the presence of cars but is there another use???What are the little cameras on pedestran crossing traffic lights for??
They are not cameras, they're sensors.

On the PUFFIN, TOUCAN and PEGASUS crossings, there is no flashing amber light. This is because the sensors detect movement on the crossing and hold them on red until the pedestrians have cleared the crossing.

They are there to take a picture when someone goes through a red light, but they have also witnessed crimes happening in front of the traffic lights, or hmmm maybe that happened in a movie...What are the little cameras on pedestran crossing traffic lights for??

Okay - all of London's traffic lights are controlled from a central point at or near Poplar in East London [Docklands]. Some traffic lights have cameras facing towards the oncoming cars from outside London - that is, traffic coming into London is being monitored.



The traffic controllers are able to slow traffic down, speed it up etc according to the weight of flow etc.



The only reason I know the above is because I remember listening to a traffic report on the radio in my car a few years ago which spoke of traffic build up in Canadian Avenue at Catford. This was based upon a police report and not just someone phoning in. While over there a few days afterwards I spotted the cameras on the traffic lights.



There is also a pedestrian crossing near where I live with similar small cams on the lights too.



And, I spotted the 'secret' location of the Traffic Control centre at Poplar purely by chance while over there wandering about one day. There's even a notice.



If you see a movie called "The Italian Job" starring Michael Caine and co., you will see how they take over the traffic control of the city of Turin - gives you some idea of what the fuzz could do then and what they can do today if needs must etc.
There is a very strict law against dancing on crossings, even if you just skip a little, almost a dance, maybe because you are having a good day, you might even be happy, who knows, but it is against the strict 'no dancing or skipping' laws.



The camera detects such strange movements, and once detected, the dance police are there, in quick step time, and pants down and bent over, the guilty party has a truncheon rammed up their ****.



This, we are reliable informed, deters the dancer from taking steps in the same direction in the future, with the deterrent usually working because the victim finds it difficult to barely walk afterwards, let alone dance or skip.



Mind you, and with the movement detectors so sensitive, many a parent has been horrified to watch their autistic child being set upon by the dance police.

In New York we have camera's on light pole which belongs to our police department. They are their for crime deterring. These are equipped with motion sensors as well as sound sensors...If a gun is discharged the camera focuses on the sounds location....Technology
